Class Overview
This is our third class on this subject. Prof Suhaimi told us to go to the IIUM GALLERY inside the Muhammad Abdul Rauf Building and write three exciting observations about Maqasid Shariah and Sustainable Development. So we don't have to attend the class. So, what is Maqasid Syariah? In general, Maqasid syariah refers to the overarching goals of Islamic law, which are to promote justice, welfare, and overall well-being for individuals and society. These goals include the protection of five fundamental elements: faith, life, intellect, lineage, and property. By prioritising these ideals, maqasid syariah aspires to build a balanced society that supports ethical behaviour, social harmony, and the realisation of human dignity, eventually directing Muslims towards a just and prosperous life.
Personal Reflection
As you can see in the picture on the right side, there is a lot of media personalties that from IIUM. So I would like to talk about Hifz Nafs at IIUM and Ill will give you guys an example from one of them wich is brother Amin Idris. Hifz nafs, or self-preservation, is a fundamental principle in Islamic teachings that IIUM supports through its comprehensive educational approach. Renowned graduates, such as Bro Amin Idris, show this principle by using their positions to promote self-awareness and ethical behaviour. Bro Amin's entertaining content motivates his audience to consider their values and behaviours, highlighting how IIUM's emphasis on spiritual and intellectual development enables individuals to effectively impact society. His journey proves the impact of combining hifz nafs with modern media, highlighting the potential of well-rounded education based on Islamic ideals.
Application of Learning
In practice, Maqasid Syariah can inspire education systems to incorporate lessons on environmental ethics, encouraging students to understand the interconnectedness of human actions and the natural world. By fostering a sense of responsibility towards nature, these educational programs can cultivate a generation that values sustainable living. Additionally, community programs can integrate Islamic teachings with practical sustainability efforts, such as waste reduction, water conservation, and renewable energy initiatives, creating a culture of care for the environment.
