Fieldwork on Campus Observation: IIUM as a Sustainable Campus
During my recent fieldwork, I explored IIUM’s campus with a focus on its sustainability initiatives, and the Shah Mosque stood out as a significant example. The images I captured highlight the mosque's efficient and practical design that aligns with IIUM's sustainability goals.
One of the key observations was the open corridors, which allow natural light and ventilation to flow through the space. This design minimizes the need for artificial lighting and air conditioning, reducing energy consumption. I also noticed the rows of shoes neatly placed along the walkway, reflecting the organized and respectful community culture.
The ablution area is another remarkable feature. Its spacious layout accommodates large numbers of users while promoting water conservation through well-designed taps and drainage systems. Cleanliness and efficiency are evident, ensuring the space remains functional and sustainable. Additionally, the presence of organized shoe racks and clean hallways emphasizes IIUM’s focus on maintaining shared spaces. These small but impactful details encourage cleanliness, order, and a collective responsibility among the campus community.
Through this fieldwork, I gained insight into how IIUM integrates sustainability into its infrastructure and daily operations. It’s a campus where environmental consciousness, functionality, and community values coexist seamlessly.
